President's Update July 1, 2009, by John Juras Bicycling was banned in parts of the Rocky Mountain Front and epic trails along the Dearborn River were closed to bikes recently through politicking by the Montana Wilderness Association. Please help turn the tide for bicycling by commenting on Senator Tester's upcoming Wilderness Bill. More info here. My letter follows: Senator Tester, Regarding the upcoming Wilderness Bill being drafted by your staff, please help maximize mountain bicycling opportunities in Montana. A Wilderness designation prohibits bicycling in otherwise perfectly suitable areas. Please modify the recommended wilderness boundaries in the upcoming Wilderness Bill to allow continued bicycle access to the trail priorities listed by the Montana Mountain Bike Alliance on their website. Bicyclists are a growing and increasingly active group of naturalists and low impact forest users who have every right to ride their bicycles in Montana's mountains. Wilderness advocates, a well-funded yet aging and shrinking group of very persuasive people, would unfairly prohibit our right to enjoy Montana's exceptional mountain bicycling opportunites. Please help tourism in Montana by fighting for our right to ride bicycles in the backcountry. You can send this message to: |
